Yiangou Architects

Yiangou Architects have been designing buildings of distinction for the last 40 years. We are an award-winning practice with a reputation for creating high-quality, carefully-considered and imaginative architecture. With our experienced team of around 30 staff, we are able to offer clients the full range of architect's services from initial conceptual design studies and presentation drawings to help you through the planning process, to detail design, construction and project management on site.

The practice is unique in its breadth of experience and the variety of building projects undertaken in different sectors over the years. We are best known for our country houses for private clients, whether these be new dwellings or alterations and extensions to historic buildings, but we also do extensive work for country estates, colleges, museums, commercial developers and institutions such as the National Trust, The Duchy of Cornwall and the University of Oxford.

Based in Cirencester, the capital of the Cotswolds, we are happy to take on projects throughout the UK and abroad.

Design Philosophy

Philosophy 1 Philosophy 2

We are inspired by any project that offers a challenge and the opportunity to create something exceptional.

Our approach to building design is very flexible as we can call on the different specialist skills of the Yiangou team to meet particular requirements of a clients brief. Our open-minded design approach has resulted in us winning several RIBA awards for innovative contemporary designs as well as coveted Georgian group awards for our new build traditional and Classical buildings.

Whether working in a traditional or a modern idiom, we are passionate about quality, detail and craftsmanship. Our design approach is based on traditional values and an understanding of context and place making for people now and in the future.

Equally adept at traditional and contemporary design, our projects are always a bespoke response to the individual characteristics of a site and the specific requirements of our discerning clients.

We have a deep respect for our country's rich architectural heritage, and our in-depth knowledge of vernacular building design ensures our buildings enhance their historic and natural environments, whether in an open parkland setting or in a dense urban environment of historic importance.

By learning from the past and developing designs that are inspired by the beauty and craftmanship of our architectural heritage, we want our buildings to meet the test of time, to stand apart from the banal and often ugly and ephemeral buildings of the last century.

Promoting Design Excellence

Promoting Design Excellence

In addition to instigating regular studio design reviews, the directors are actively involved in teaching and mentoring of young architects through links with local universities. We also participate in public engagement activities (local community workshops and public exhibitions) and the chairing of design panel reviews and international competition judging.

Directors sit on both the Cheltenham Architects Panel and the Gloucestershire Design Panel, a team of professional architects, landscape architects, planners and biodiversity specialists, invited to review important future building proposals in the whole of Gloucestershire.

All directors have been involved in reviewing schemes over the last six years which has helped promote healthy debate about the quality of architecture in our county. Developers and architects and local planning authorities have found this free consultation service invaluable.

We also offer a dedicated scholarship aimed at encouraging research from young architects in disadvantaged parts of the globe.

The Yiangou Team

Established in 1981, the practice is run by directors Neil Quinn, Anthony Lewis, Tony Salmon, Ross Sharpe and Andrew Inchley, who have worked closely together over the years to create the happy and productive team it is today.

The success of the practice is due to our creative, collaborative and professional approach to projects at all levels. The five architect directors work closely with five associates, job runners who have been with the practice for over twelve years, and are assisted by qualified project architects and supporting architectural technologists and assistants, including the best RIBA Part 1 and Part 2 students that we encourage to join the practice each year.

Our architectural team is backed up by dedicated administrative staff, and a specialist in-house IT and marketing manager.

The skills of each individual varies enormously but our collaborative team approach to different stages of work ensures projects are run efficiently, on time and to budget.

Project team activities are driven and managed by our senior management team of which we are particularly proud. Experts in their fields, the Directors and Associates boast a broad range of sector knowledge and specialism.

We believe that our employees are key to our success and our high staff retention is reflective of their commitment to the future of the practice. Above all our team get a great deal of pleasure working on quality projects, often requiring unique design solutions to meet clients requirements or special site constraints.

Sustainability

Sustainability

At Yiangou Architects sustainable design is part of our standard service.

All our new buildings exceed the current Building Regulations minimum standards to achieve energy efficient, highly insulated and controlled environments. Low carbon materials are specified and renewable heating technologies incorporated into each scheme whenever possible.

Good sustainable design need not involve expensive modern technologies but can be achieved through careful planning: the orientation of a dwelling, making use of natural light, solar gain and thermal mass, as well as passive ventilation design principles.

Yiangou Architects Ltd is a member of the Green Register of Construction Professionals.
